During the ceremony, a total of 18 awards for books published in 2005 and 2006, for both Welsh- and English language books, were presented for the bestsellers in various categories. Awards were also presented for the most borrowed library books, as well as awards for design and production. The individual awards were commissioned from Cardiff-based artist, Carwyn Evans, winner of this year's Ifor Davies Prize at the Flintshire National Eisteddfod.
'The ceremony was an opportunity to acknowledge the work of publishers in Wales and to honour the winners of each category,' said Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, Director of the Welsh Books Council. 'The awards reflect the wide range of books published in Wales today as well as the high standards of production. These are some of the factors, together with the financial support of the Welsh Assembly Government, that have contributed to the development of the publishing industry in recent years.'
Rhodri Glyn Thomas also paid tribute to the individual publishers: 'I'm honoured to be here tonight to acknowledge the work of Welsh publishers and it's encouraging to note that the quality of their books is reflected in the increase in sales of books from Wales, in both languages. We have a strong literary tradition here in Wales and the Wales Assembly Government is pleased to support the publishing industry in Wales and to help provide books of the highest quality for future readers.'
Highlights of the awards ceremony will be transmitted on S4C on Monday evening, 5 November.
