Gio Compario hits the right note with learners! - 25 May 2018

On Friday, 1 June, at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in Builth Wells, the Welsh Books Council and the National Centre for Learning Welsh will launch the first ten new titles in the Amdani (Go for it!) series  –  with the Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan AM.

And Welsh tenor, Wynne Evans, known for his unique voice  –  and moustache!  –  from the popular Go Compare television advert, is the star of one of the new books in the series, which will hopefully hit the right note with Welsh learners.

Wynne Evans – O Gaerfyrddin i Go Compare, written by Elin Meek (CAA Cymru) is the latest title in the Amdani series, and is published alongside three other books in the series: Pegi Talfryn (Gangsters yn y Glaw, Gomer); Siôn Tomos Owen (Y Fawr a’r Fach – Straeon o’r Rhondda, Y Lolfa); and Sarah Reynolds (Cyffesion Saesnes yng Nghymru, Atebol)  – with all four titles appearing hot on the heels of the first six books which were published in April.

Helgard Krause, Chief Executive of the Welsh Books Council, who has herself learnt Welsh, said: "We are very pleased to welcome these new books to an audience that's crucial to the Welsh-language books market. The language is a vitally important part of our culture and these books are a fantastic opportunity to encourage more adults to learn or improve their Welsh."

Four of Wales's most prominent publishers  –  Atebol, CAA Cymru, Atebol and Y Lolfa  –  have been working together since last summer to publish 20 books for those who are learning Welsh, or have been learning and are reticent to pick up a Welsh-language book. The titles have been developed to coincide with the roll-out of the new Welsh for Adults courses across Wales from September and are carefully graded on four levels  –  Entry, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.

Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan AM said: "It's vital that Welsh learners get plenty of opportunities to enjoy using the language in all sorts of contexts, and this new series of Welsh-language leisure books is one such example.

"The books will support what’s taught on the numerous Welsh-language courses available in communities across Wales and will help people learn the language and become fluent."

Helen Prosser, Director of Strategy of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, said:

"It's important our learners have plenty of opportunities to practise using their Welsh outside the classroom, so they can develop their skills and gain confidence. This new series of entertaining books will be a fantastic resource, especially so as the books reflect the different language patterns taught on our courses.

"It's been a pleasure working with the Welsh Books Council and we hope this initiative will help attract learners to reading Welsh books in general, and all along their language journey."

Copies of the  Amdani  books are available to buy at the Urdd National Eisteddfod at Builth Wells and in bookshops throughout Wales.

We warmly welcome you to join us for the launch on Friday, 1 June, at the Dysgu Cymraeg / Learn Welsh stand on the Urdd Eisteddfod field, Builth Wells, at 11.15am.
